Job Summary of Heavy Truck Driver:
The key task of a Heavy Truck Driver is the transportation of trailers between Service Centers and designated turn-points using tractor-trailer combinations. A Heavy Truck Driver's primary job is to convey goods across long distances, typically between distribution centers, warehouses, or terminals, guaranteeing on-time and secure delivery. This role involves driving commercial vehicles, including trucks, tractor-trailers, or delivery vans, to diverse destinations.
Responsibilities of Heavy Truck Driver:
• Handle tractor-trailer combinations, with the possibility of including multiple trailers in the setup.
• Implement daily pre-departure and safety evaluations on equipment. Attach/detach trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer. Validate and finalize mandatory documentation and reports.
• Ensure the maintenance of correct daily logs.
• Follow guidelines and policies regarding hazardous materials.
• Follow dispatch guidance and maintain contact with dispatch staff to relay any essential information like delays, arrivals, or equipment malfunctions.
• Possibly necessary to implement the linking of car tire chains. Potentially tasked with fulfilling the obligations of a urban driver or a loading bay worker when operationally needed.
• Perform necessary tasks for the transportation of goods onto and off of vehicles.
• Ensure compliance with all appropriate laws, rules, and regulations, as well as adhering to internal company policies and guidelines.
• Carry out any other responsibilities as necessary.
Qualification of Heavy Truck Driver:
• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials and tank endorsements
• Automatic transmission CDL restriction allowed.
• Must possess 1 year experience within most recent 3 years, or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.
• Must have acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Ability to hook-up and break-down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of about 100 pounds, several times a day or more.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.
• Demonstrates initiative and motivation.
Working Conditions of Heavy Truck Driver:
• Cover extensive miles around the clock, navigating through diverse weather conditions and road surfaces.
• Prolonged exposure to loud noise and excessive vibration can pose risks to one's physical and mental health
• Being subjected to dust and diesel exhaust.
• Contact with harmful materials that are shipped and handled following the regulations set by the Department of Transportation.
• Variations in hours can occur based on operational demands.
